Effective communication

As I was working on a client issue today, one phrase was repeated over and over. That phrase “communicate so we can resolve this”.  As we continued to work on the issue at hand, it was clear that good communication was going to be key to resolving the issue.

Life is like that. The more we communicate effectively, the better our life will be. Great communication is hard to do, but well worth the effort.

How many misunderstandings could we avoid if we communicated effectively?

How many broken relationships could we mend if we communicated effectively?

Effective communication doesn’t just mean constant communication. It is so much more than that. We can say a lot and still not communicate effectively.

Keys to effective communication are easy to practice, if you are willing to put forth the effort.

  • Communicate honestly. Say what you mean, without being judgmental. Honesty is the best policy, always.
  • Listen to the other party. Really listen. Don’t plan your response while they are talking. Take the time to really hear them.
  • State back to them what they have said. When you can state back what they have said, you have truly heard them. At that point, you can respond to what they said, not what you thought they said.
  • Don’t let anger temper your response. When you are angry, you are defending your position, not looking for a solution. When anger wins out, everyone else loses.

Effective communication is the key to everything we do in life. Put these tips to use and watch your communication and life improve.
