This time of year, we are getting ready to go back to school. This year, my son is starting his first year of college. So, as he gets ready for his for new adventure, I started thinking.
Most high school seniors and college students really don’t have a plan for their lives after school. Some students don’t even have a plan for their remaining years in school besides making it through. That is not the best way to approach some of the most important years of their lives.
Here are some tips for making the most of your (or your children’s) remaining years in school;
- Develop good study habits. Learn to stay a little ahead instead of procrastinating. This lesson learned early in life will pay dividends not only in school but in everything you do as move into the real world.
- Start finding your passion. If a subject or activity brings joy in your life, find out if you can do it for a living. If so, focus on learning all you can about it. It is far better to start your career doing what you love than having to work at something that doesn’t bring passion.
- Take time for activities; network. Don’t get to the point where you are constantly studying or working. Time for activities and play is important to have balance in your life.
- Finally, learn to enjoy the moment. School, or college, can seem to be a grinding activity that you have to get through to move on to the next phase your life. Happiness comes not from wishing for things or being with someone, but from within. Enjoy the classes, the friendships made, the activities and yes, even the school work.
As parents, we are given the responsibility to help guide our children to living their one life to the fullest. Sometimes we get caught up being about the grades, the clothes our children have or the vehicles they drive. Help them develop skills and habits that will serve them well in school and when they become citizens in our community.
If you know of students getting ready to go back to school, share this with them. Help them get a leg up on life that will put them ahead of the crowd.
