Lessons for Life – Star Wars

We can find lessons for our lives in most anything, if we are looking for them. I have always loved the Star Wars series of movies and recently looked at them from a coaches point of view. The first three, episodes four through six, were ground breaking movies. A new, legendary mythology was born. As someone who grow up in that era, they had an impact on my life. There are numerous lessons we can learn from this series of movies.

First, there is good in everyone. Darth Vader brings Luke to his master to be turned to the dark side in the final episode, Return of the Jedi, and due to the pain Luke endures, Darth Vader kills his master. Even though throughout the series, we see Anakin turn into Darth Vader and loose all his goodness (we think), when his son is about to be killed, Darth Vader’s inner good takes over to save Luke. Some people are like that; they have to be face to face with disaster before they will allow the goodness to come out. However, we should recognize that all people have good inside and try to draw it out of them. Like Luke, we should never give up hope.

Second, Yoda was right when he said “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” Fear stops positive growth. Fear also leads to the very end that Yoda points to – suffering. When we can control our fear, we are able to achieve great, positive things.

Finally, we each have to make a choice and embrace a path. Every choice we make leads down a path – either a path towards peace and goodness or a path of pain and suffering. It is up to us to choose wisely. We may have negative feelings and emotions but we cannot give into them. We have to have hope and keeping moving down the path to peace and goodness.

Let me know if you have other illustrations from Star Wars that are good life lessons.
