Reframe Your Life

In NLP, frames provide context for our thoughts or actions.  To reframe a thought or action, we give it a different context or content.  This helps to change a bad thought or action to a positive.  By doing this, we can change our perspective, therefore changing our lives.

Reframing happens all around us.  Examples are:

  • Politicians.  Politicians are master reframers.   One of the most famous political reframes was in 1984 when Ronald Reagan, who everyone said was too old to be president, stated “I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”  That statement changed the dynamic of the election cycle and Reagan’s age was no longer an issue.
  • Excuses are reframes.  Excuses all us to give our attributes or habits a different context.
  • Some fairy tales are reframes.  The most common one is the boy crying wolf.

What can you reframe in your life to make your life better?  Can you reframe something as simple as Reagan did?

Have you reframed something in your life already?  I would love to here your experience with reframing.  Please leave a comment to share your experience or ask a question.
