What are the qualities that you think of when you think of a leader?
Do you envision a grizzly old general smoking a cigar and the troops responding with heroism? Do you envision a quarterback leading his team down the field for the last second score to win the Super Bowl?
Most leaders are far less famous. A leader is anyone who inspires other to follow them to achieve a vision. All leaders have some common qualities. These qualities can be natural (not common) or can be learned through practice and patience.
Leaders listen to those around them. Leaders understand that listening is skill that they have to be very good at to lead. As a leader, a solver of problems, you can not fix a problem with understanding the problem. This understanding comes from listening. With understanding comes knowledge.
Leaders Have Vision
Vision is important for organizations to guide them. A leader has a vision of where they want the organization and how to get there. This vision is communicated through the leadership team to all staff and clients. The clearer the vision, the more likely it will accepted by the organization.
Leaders Are Confident
Leaders have and exude confidence. They are confident in their vision, their colleagues and their choices. This confidence inspires everyone around them to be and do their best.
Leaders Are Steady
A leader display steady nerves. Leaders don’t have major highs and lows. They are steady, calm in face of adversity. This steadiness allows others around the leader to remain calm. Leaders see confusion and adversity as an opportunity to grow and prove their abilities.
Leaders Have Integrity
Leaders have integrity in everything they do. Their colleagues know that when they say something, it is true and will happen. Without integrity a leader will have a hard time with their staff. People won’t trust them. Once a leader loses their reputation, they lose their effectiveness as a leader.
Being a leader isn’t about heroics. It isn’t about being the boss. Being a leader is about putting in the hard work. It is about taking responsibility. It is about the character of the leader.
